April Blog Post

Hello Everybody!
Happy Spring!
I hope you enjoy reading some quick tidbits on what we’ve been up to in 1-1 this April!

Readers Workshop
This week, we will complete our Content Literacy unit on Light and Sound. Beginning next week, the children will be learning about poetry during our Reader's Workshop lessons. They will work with:
-Playing with sound (rhyme, repetition, alliteration, and onomatopoeia)
-Identifying clues to find the big idea (Title, Who?, Where?, When?, Why?)
-Connecting through schema (using my prior knowledge and how I connected to the poem)
-Asking questions to help find the mood of the poem

***If your children have any poetry books at home and would like to bring them in to share and read over the next few weeks, please send them in! Be sure to write their name in the front cover!***

Earth Day
To celebrate Earth Day, the children listened to the story, Earth Day Hooray. After, they brainstormed different ways that they can heal our Earth. The children then wrote their own piece about a way they can heal the Earth. They created an Earth out of construction paper and glued their writing piece inside!

The children also wrote an acrostic poem using the words, Earth Day. Together they brainstormed different words and phrases to go with each letter. They chose their favorite word/phrase for each letter and created their acrostic poem. They completed the activity with a photo of themselves holding an earth.

Writing
Over the last few weeks, the children have been working on our writing unit on Persuasive Writing. The children worked with stating their opinion on some given topics. After, they stated their opinion they gave reasons to support their opinion. The children wrote a short persuasive piece on whether or not first graders should go to bed at 6pm. They shared their writing with a partner. We talked about the different reasons we write persuasively. To improve our lives or the lives of others or to promote something. The children then brainstormed a list of problems that need solving or things that can be improved around the school. Together as a class, we wrote a persuasive letter on why the outside basketball hoops should be lowered. The children came up with an opinion and three reasons to support their opinion. This week, the children will publish their persuasive piece in letter form. They will deliver it to their audience (a staff member at Dryden School) and will hopefully receive a letter back!

Next week, the children will begin their last writing unit, Expository Writing. The children will work with identifying a fiction and a nonfiction sentence as I read two books about wolves, The True Story of The Three Little Pigs and Wolves. They will discuss the differences and similarities between fiction and nonfiction texts. As the unit continues the children will practice researching and recording facts about animals. They will complete the unit by writing a nonfiction book on an animal of their choice.

Math
The mathematicians just finished unit 13 in math. Their math tests came home in backpack mail tonight. They did a wonderful job adding and subtracting using numbers 0-40.

Today, we started our new chapter, chapter 15. This chapter will focus on calendars and telling time to the hour and half hour.

Science
The scientists have been working hard on their Examining Living Things Unit. Look at all the great lessons they have been engaged in recently!

-What is a biologist
-Comparing animals and plants
-Identifying plant parts: roots, stem, leaf, petals & flower parts, and fruits & seeds

Up Next:
-Animal body parts
-Observing Crickets
-Studying Gold Fish

Be sure to check our twitter feed and the children’s seesaw posts to see photos and hear what the children are learning about.

Personalized Learning (PL)
The children are loving PL! They are eager to research and explore topics of interest to them. The children have been selecting from a range of topics from a heart map that they created when we kicked off PL. Their heart map includes: Things I'm Curious About, Things I want to Learn, and Things that Need to be Fixed. The children set a goal for themselves at the start of every PL time. They work alone or together to research their topic. They record their research in a format that works best for them (sketch noting, sticky notes, or draw and label). When they feel like they are ready to share their learning, they are in charge of selecting a way that they want to do so. Some children have made posters, Seesaw posts, books, videos, or created their project. Other children, have taken their research home and made something at home (think items they can't make at school - such as food or items that need a sewing machine). Along the way, the children give/receive feedback in the form of "glows" and "grows." I am learning so much from the children through this process. They truly love this time and ask to have more built into our day. They love owning their learning. Ask your child to talk to you about their current PL topic and where they are at in the process.

News You Can Use - March 18th!

Hello 1-1 Families!
Just a few quick tidbits below.

Reader's Workshop
We have started working on our next unit for Reader's Workshop. It is our content unit on Light and Sound and it ties into our current science unit, also titled Light and Sound. The children are working on:
-Exploring the concepts of light and sound through reading various genres.
-The children are comparing and contrasting information they learned from reading different texts.
-They are responding to the topics we are reading through: class discussions, turn and talk conversations, and written responses.
-The children are working on gathering facts and information and synthesizing the information they are learning.
-They are continuing their work with identifying and using nonfiction text features to gather additional information.

Writing
The children completed their How To writing unit. They are eager for you to view their How To book during conferences. Be sure to take a few minutes to check out their book. They worked very hard to write, edit, and publish their How To book. I am proud of the children's dedication during the whole writing process. It was fun learning how to do some new activities while reading the children's books.

Math
We completed Unit 12 in math last week. The children took their Unit Test on Friday. I will share these tests with you during conferences. The unit focused on using different strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems with numbers between 0-40. The children also worked with base 10 blocks to construct different two digit numbers. They also worked on completing different number sequences by finding and completing the pattern. We will start Unit 13 after break.

Science
The children have concluded their Light and Sound science unit. They enjoyed experimenting with sound and light over the last month. Be sure to scroll through our twitter feed on the right side of the page to view pictures and tidbits about the unit.

100th Day & Valentine's Day Fun!

Hello 1-1 Families!
What a fun week we had! Read about it below!

100th Day!
On Monday, the children celebrated the 100th day of school. They looked great dressed up like they were 100! The children enjoyed participating in an assortment of 100th day activities. They created a 100th day crown showing different ways to make 100. The children heard the story, 100th Day Worries. They wrote a story about what they would do if they had 100 dollars. The story focused on how they would do something nice for someone else. Later in the day, the children created artwork using the numbers 1, 0, 0. Then, they created a story about their artwork. In the afternoon, the children were excited to work on an assortment of 100th STEM math stations. We had a wonderful 100th day of school!

Valentine's Day!
Today, we celebrated Valentine’s Day. In the afternoon, the children had their valentine’s party. They passed out their valentines, enjoyed creating a “Love Monster”, played Valentine's Day Bingo, and played a few Valentine math games.

A special thank you to our room reps Mrs. Barbieri for organizing and prepping the craft and game for our party. Also, a BIG Thank You to Mrs. Barbieri, Mrs. Giurato, and Mrs. Torok who attended the party and ran the stations. You made our party a huge success! Thank you!

I would like to thank all of you for making my Valentine’s SO SPECIAL. I loved all my valentines, flowers, gifts, and yummy treats. Thank you so much!

New You Can Use - February 4th

Hello Everyone!
I can’t believe that January has raced by so quickly and we’re already in February! Here are some of the fun things we have been working on since the New Year!

Reader's Workshop
We are really enjoying our Nonfiction unit. The children have been working on:
-Identifying Nonfiction Text Features (Why are they important? What can you learn from them?)
-Generating Questions
-Using the Table of Contents
-Stop and Jots (recording their new learning and thoughts)
-Finding the meaning of unfamiliar words
-Author's Purpose

New Year’s Resolutions
The children worked on writing New Year’s Resolutions. They came up with three to four goals they have for the new year and wrote them down. They worked very hard on their writing and came up with some wonderful resolutions!

Martin Luther King, Jr.
On the Friday before MLK day and the Tuesday after, the children watched a short brainpopjr video on Martin Luther King, Jr. We also read the book, Martin’s Big Words. The children discussed what Martin Luther King’s dreams were. Then, they had the opportunity to complete an organizer expressing a dream that they have. The children completed a writing titled, My Dream. The children also used Seesaw to take a photo of themselves and record their own “big words” around it.

Social Studies and Writing
During the month of January, our social studies/ writing unit focused on U.S. Symbols, George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln. The children listened to a book about citizens and rights and responsibilities. They learned about the qualities and responsibilities of a good citizen. The children then discussed how they are good citizens at school, home, and in their community. Each child wrote about what makes them a good citizen.

The children researched George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. They listened to books and as a class we wrote a list of important facts about their lives. The children then chose five important facts to record on their facts sheet about each George and Abraham. This past week, the children wrote about their favorite president (George Washington or Abraham Lincoln) that we researched. Using their graphic organizer, they wrote a paragraph about their president. They completed their paper by turning it into a replica of George or Abe.

Each child also chose one symbol to research using pebblego. Then, they wrote a report about their symbol. The children each had the opportunity to present their report to the class. We continued our research on the symbols using books and short video clips. It was so exciting to see how excited the children got.

Math
The children completed Unit 8 in math. Their math test came home at the start of last week. This unit focused on working with adding and subtracting within 20, solving real word number stories, and using a variety of strategies to reach an answer. The test was a little tricky for the children, so we spent some extra time reviewing the concepts in class and going over the most missed test problems. Please continue to review these concepts at home. We have now moved on to Unit 9 and the children are working on comparing objects by looking at their length and height. The students enjoyed documenting some of their learning using Seesaw.

Gumball Math
The children have enjoyed starting gumball math. They groan after lunch if I tell them, "today's not a gumball math day." As we continue to work on building our additon fact fluency, please use their gumball math tests to help them practice. They can use whatever problems they did not complete as practice. If you are looking for additional pages, please use this website:

The facts are listed by number and you can click and print only the pages you need. Remember the goal is for the child to complete 48, 49, or 50 problems in 3 minutes to move on to the next level.

Star Students
Ryelan, Miko, and Henry were our star students this month. Thanks Ryelan, Miko, and Henry  for sharing all about you!

Royal Readers
A special thank you to Ryelan’s mom and Henry's parents who all joined us this month as our Royal Readers. The children loved listening to all the stories that you read!

Happy Birthday
A very happy birthday to Sophia. We hope you had a wonderful day!

Global School Play Day
Just a reminder, Wednesday, February 7th is Global School Play Day. Our classroom will be playing in the morning, until lunch. Please have your child bring a game or toy to school. Remember NO ELECTRONIC GAMES/TOYS PLEASE! Also, please DO NOT send in anything that your child does not want other children to play with.  We will do our very best to ensure that the games and toys are returned in the same fashion that they came to school.

Notes:
-Please continue to send your child to school each day with all their winter gear. The children will go outside to play as long as the temperature is not to cold! It also helps to label all their boots, mittens, hats, and coats. Sometimes the children have the exact same ones and it is hard for them to determine whose is whose!

-100th Day is this Friday, February 9th. Don’t forget that your child is allowed to dress up like they are 100 years old.We have a full day of 100th day fun planned. I promise to share lots of fun photos from the day!

-Valentine’s Day is Wednesday, February 14th. We will have a small class party in the afternoon. Look for a letter coming home tomorrow that has directions for making a Valentine’s Day box with your child and our procedures for Valentines.
