Welcome First Graders!

Hello First Graders!

Welcome to our classroom!

It was so nice to me many of you tonight. Thank you for coming to visit our classroom! I look forward to meeting those of you who could not attend Monday morning.  I can't wait to see everyone on Monday, August 29th for our first day of school. We are going to have a fun filled day!

Just a quick reminder:

Don't forget to bring your "All About Me" bag to school on Monday. Fill your bag with three items that tell us about you. It could be a picture, a book, a trophy, whatever you wish! Remember to write your name on the front and complete the questions on the back. We will spend some time looking at each other's items and getting to know one another during our first week. I will send the bags home as we finish sharing. We may only get through a couple a day, the bags will come home slowly over the next week!

See you Monday!

Last Day of School!

This week, we celebrated all of our July and August birthdays. Happy birthday to Kayla, Sasha, and Damien. We hope that you all have very happy birthdays in July and August!

Thank You
I can't believe that today is the last day of school. The year has gone by so quickly. I have enjoyed working with your children each and every day this year! Thank you for making this year a wonderful year. I appreciate all of our parent volunteers, you made the year extra special! I wish all of you a happy, relaxing, and safe summer! Please stop by and say hello next year!

Board Game Note!

Board Game Day
On our last day of school, Tuesday, June 7th your child may bring their favorite board game to school (board game, card game, puzzle). The children will celebrate their last day of school by playing the games with one another. Please make sure the game is labeled with your child’s name and that the box or bag is secured closed so that no pieces go missing. Thank you!

Field Day Fun!

Field day was a huge success! The children enjoyed participating in all the field day games. Their favorite station was Splash Blast (if you hit the target, it popped a water balloon splashing water on a TEACHER!) Thank you to our two parent leaders, Mrs. Trudeau and Mrs. Walter. The children enjoyed moving around to all of the stations with you. Thank you also to ALL the parent volunteers who made field day possible. The children had a great time! Below you will find a slide show of photos from field day. Enjoy!

News You Can Use!

Hello 1-1 Families!
I can not believe the end of the year is quickly approaching. It's hard to believe that in just over a week we will say goodbye to this school year and hello to summer. Below you will find some highlights from our last few weeks.

Sounds Like Fun Field Trip
The scientists in our class enjoyed a visit from Scientist Anne last week. They were able to learn about the different types of sound. Discover what sounds actually are through hands on experiments. Each scientist has the opportunity to make sound travel through different media, build their very own ear drum, and make salt dance and water fly!

Science & Engineering
Musical Instrument Making
The children had a great time over the last week and a half as they engaged in a science and engineering project. The children met in groups of three and over the course of three sessions, the children learned about engineers, discussed musical instruments and the ways they make sounds, brainstormed ways to create their own instruments, and created their instruments using every day items. The children enjoyed using the vocabulary they learned during our science and content literacy unit as they constructed and tested their musical instruments. They paid close attention to the way the sounds were produced. Next week, the children will share their instruments with the class and reflect on their experience.

Star Student
Thank you to Poojak, our last star students. It was nice to learn so many new things about you!

**Photo coming soon**

Happy Birthday
Happy Birthday to all our friends who have celebrated birthdays recently!

Summer Math Packet
Over the summer vacation, I strongly encourage you to set aside some time for your child to continue working on their reading, writing, and math skills. This will ensure continued progress in second grade.

If you would like to have a summer math practice packet, please send me an email or a handwritten note by Tuesday, May 31st letting me know. I will send a copy home with your child the last week of school, along with some reading and writing ideas for the summer.

Thank you,
Mrs. Johnson
Notes:
-No School on Monday, May 30th because of Memorial Day!
-Friday, June 3rd is Field Day! Please send your child to school in comfortable clothing, including gym shoes. They should also bring a water bottle to carry with them to all the games. Your child is encouraged to bring sun screen (they will be allowed to apply it after lunch before field day begins).

China Presentations

Famous Landmarks in China
During LMC over the last month the children have been hard at work researching famous landmarks in China. The children worked in groups to research one famous landmark in China: Beijing, Hong Kong, The Forbidden City, Yangtze River, or the Terra Cotta Army. During the first week, the children watched a short video and recorded information on their topic. For the second week, they used websites and a book to complete additional research on their topic. Over the last two weeks, the children worked together to turn their facts into a slide show presentation. Click on the links below to view their presentations. We hope you enjoy the children’s hard work!

Terracotta Army by Hunter, Julia, Maggie, and Ethan

Forbidden City by Sammy, Isabella, Nico, and Charlie

Beijing by Sasha, Nathan, Evan, Grace, and Damien

Yangtze River by Kayla, Sofia, Gavin, and Zach

Hong Kong by Poojak, Chase, Piper, and Kris

Thank You!
