Pumpkin Math & Pumpkin Decorating 2018

Pumpkin Math
Today, the children became pumpkin investigators as they used their pumpkin to complete a pumpkin math packet. The investigators began by estimating the height, weight, measurement, and number of lines on their pumpkin. Then using their investigative tools they found out the correct height, weight, measurement, and number of lines on their pumpkin. We even did an experiment to see if pumpkins sink or float. What do you think the answer was? Ask your child!

Pumpkin Decorating
Toe end the day, the children loved having a family member or volunteer come in to help them decorate their pumpkin. What a sight it was to see the children and volunteers hard at work creating so many different characters and animals out of their pumpkins. Thank you to everyone for coming and making this an enjoyable event for the children. The pumpkins looked fantastic! Thank you also to all of you who helped clean up the classroom after pumpkin decorating, I appreciate all your help! Enjoy all the photos from our fun filled decorating event! I hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as the children and I did!

First Week!

Meet Our Class!

First Day Photos

Click Here to be taken to a link to view all our first day photos!

We had a great first week in 1-1! The children enjoyed getting to know one another through the sharing of their "All About Me" bags. They were surprised to learn that so many classmates had similar interests and hobbies.

Classroom Rules
As a teacher, one of my goals is to create a classroom environment where all students feel safe and valued. Last Tuesday, we worked together as a team to come up with our classroom rules. Discussing the rules together gives the children ownership and lets them actively decide what they want our classroom community to look like. The children did a wonderful job of coming up with rules that will make our classroom a safe and happy learning environment. The children came up with such a long list that we had to narrow the rules down. The five rules below encompass all the rules the children came up with.

Our Classroom Rules:
1. Listen to the speaker.
2. Raise your hand to speak or leave your seat.
3. Always be honest.
4. Be a caring friend.
5. Always try your best.

Routines
The children did a wonderful job going through our classroom routines and procedures last week. They have now learned how to solve some simple problems on their own (what to do if their pencil breaks, what to do if they have a question, where to put work when they are finished, what to do if they need a restroom break, etc.) They are now experts at going through: arrival, lunchtime, and stack and pack routines.

Reading/ Writing
The children listened to the story, A Bad Case of The Stripes. After, they created a picture of themselves with a bad case of something they love. Their projects are hanging outside our classroom in the hallway.

Later in the week, the children listened to the book, Have You Filled a Bucket Today? The children learned, everyone has an invisible bucket. We are at our best when our buckets are overflowing – and at our worst when they are empty. Everyone also has an invisible dipper. In each interaction, we can use our dipper either to fill or to dip from others’ buckets. Whenever we choose to fill others’ buckets, we in turn fill our own. The children completed a Bucket Filler/ Bucket Dipper sort and then completed a poster on how they are a bucket filler both at home and at school. You can view these in the hallway at curriculum night.

At the end of the week, they also brainstormed a list of all the things the will do as first graders. Then they completed a writing titled, First Grader At Last! Each student wrote about what they will do this year as first graders. After writing, they created a paper first grader to glue their writing to. You can view their writing project at Curriculum Night. They did an amazing job!

Math
This week, the children were introduced to our calendar procedures. They learned what they will do when it is their turn to be Calendar Hopper or Mathematician. We will begin our math curriculum this coming week.

On Thursday, the children brainstormed a list of what they think they will do as Mathematicians this year. Then, they created a mathematician project.

Notes:
~ Thank you for all your support at home and your help in making the start of this school year a great one!
~Thursday, August 30th is Curriculum Night. I hope you can join me in our classroom to learn about what your child's year in first grade will look like. K-2nd grade presentations are from 6:00-6:40 pm. This is an adults only event!

Have a great week!

Field Day and Summer Notes

Field Day Fun
Field day was a huge success! The children enjoyed participating in all the field day games. Their favorite station was the Big Splash  (if you hit the target, it dumped a bucket of water, splashing water on a TEACHER!) Thank you to our two parent leaders, Mrs. Oversmith and Ms. Coleman. The children enjoyed moving around to all of the stations with you. Thank you also to ALL the parent volunteers who made field day possible. The children had a great time! Please click below to view a slide show of photos from field day.
Enjoy!

Summer Learning Links
Summer Keyboarding Challenge - I will send home flyers in backpack mail tomorrow.

Summer Reading - Click here to view ideas for different summer reading opportunities.

Summer Packets - I will send home a few packets on the last day that the students can work on over the summer, a writing packet and a packet that contains math, grammar, and some additional writing activities. If the children finish either packet over the summer, I have encouraged them to bring it back to me at the start of the school year. They will earn a lunch with me as a reward for completing the packer. What a fun way to kick off the start to the school year!

Fact Practice - For those of you who asked for ways to practice gumball math over the summer, I can not send the exact sheets home but click on the above link to visit a site where you can print similar pages. I'm so proud of the students progress with gumball math this year! Keep it up over the summer!

April Blog Post

Hello Everybody!
Happy Spring!
I hope you enjoy reading some quick tidbits on what we’ve been up to in 1-1 this April!

Readers Workshop
This week, we will complete our Content Literacy unit on Light and Sound. Beginning next week, the children will be learning about poetry during our Reader's Workshop lessons. They will work with:
-Playing with sound (rhyme, repetition, alliteration, and onomatopoeia)
-Identifying clues to find the big idea (Title, Who?, Where?, When?, Why?)
-Connecting through schema (using my prior knowledge and how I connected to the poem)
-Asking questions to help find the mood of the poem

***If your children have any poetry books at home and would like to bring them in to share and read over the next few weeks, please send them in! Be sure to write their name in the front cover!***

Earth Day
To celebrate Earth Day, the children listened to the story, Earth Day Hooray. After, they brainstormed different ways that they can heal our Earth. The children then wrote their own piece about a way they can heal the Earth. They created an Earth out of construction paper and glued their writing piece inside!

The children also wrote an acrostic poem using the words, Earth Day. Together they brainstormed different words and phrases to go with each letter. They chose their favorite word/phrase for each letter and created their acrostic poem. They completed the activity with a photo of themselves holding an earth.

Writing
Over the last few weeks, the children have been working on our writing unit on Persuasive Writing. The children worked with stating their opinion on some given topics. After, they stated their opinion they gave reasons to support their opinion. The children wrote a short persuasive piece on whether or not first graders should go to bed at 6pm. They shared their writing with a partner. We talked about the different reasons we write persuasively. To improve our lives or the lives of others or to promote something. The children then brainstormed a list of problems that need solving or things that can be improved around the school. Together as a class, we wrote a persuasive letter on why the outside basketball hoops should be lowered. The children came up with an opinion and three reasons to support their opinion. This week, the children will publish their persuasive piece in letter form. They will deliver it to their audience (a staff member at Dryden School) and will hopefully receive a letter back!

Next week, the children will begin their last writing unit, Expository Writing. The children will work with identifying a fiction and a nonfiction sentence as I read two books about wolves, The True Story of The Three Little Pigs and Wolves. They will discuss the differences and similarities between fiction and nonfiction texts. As the unit continues the children will practice researching and recording facts about animals. They will complete the unit by writing a nonfiction book on an animal of their choice.

Math
The mathematicians just finished unit 13 in math. Their math tests came home in backpack mail tonight. They did a wonderful job adding and subtracting using numbers 0-40.

Today, we started our new chapter, chapter 15. This chapter will focus on calendars and telling time to the hour and half hour.

Science
The scientists have been working hard on their Examining Living Things Unit. Look at all the great lessons they have been engaged in recently!

-What is a biologist
-Comparing animals and plants
-Identifying plant parts: roots, stem, leaf, petals & flower parts, and fruits & seeds

Up Next:
-Animal body parts
-Observing Crickets
-Studying Gold Fish

Be sure to check our twitter feed and the children’s seesaw posts to see photos and hear what the children are learning about.

Personalized Learning (PL)
The children are loving PL! They are eager to research and explore topics of interest to them. The children have been selecting from a range of topics from a heart map that they created when we kicked off PL. Their heart map includes: Things I'm Curious About, Things I want to Learn, and Things that Need to be Fixed. The children set a goal for themselves at the start of every PL time. They work alone or together to research their topic. They record their research in a format that works best for them (sketch noting, sticky notes, or draw and label). When they feel like they are ready to share their learning, they are in charge of selecting a way that they want to do so. Some children have made posters, Seesaw posts, books, videos, or created their project. Other children, have taken their research home and made something at home (think items they can't make at school - such as food or items that need a sewing machine). Along the way, the children give/receive feedback in the form of "glows" and "grows." I am learning so much from the children through this process. They truly love this time and ask to have more built into our day. They love owning their learning. Ask your child to talk to you about their current PL topic and where they are at in the process.

Star Students
Thank you to our past three star students, Ben B, Josie, and Maddie. We enjoyed learning more about each of you!

Royal Readers
A special thank you to Ben’s Mom, Josie’s Mom and Maddie’s Mom, Dad, and little sister, and Miko’s Mom who joined us recently as our Royal Readers. The children loved listening to the stories that you read.
